Fallen Marine's jersey to be retired
Lance Cpl. Nicolas S. O'Brien will be buried on the morning of June 28 Arlington, Va., but plans are still underway to honor his memory for years in his native county.
Prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps and go to fight for his country in Afghanistan, Mr. O'Brien grew up playing baseball in Stanley Leisure. The years he spent on the local diamond will be recognized at a ceremony to retire jersey at noon Saturday near field Kiser Elementary School.
"We would encourage anyone who has played with Nic or who knows his family to come out and support them on that day," said Stanley Deason Leisure Tug director.
Known to his friends and family as "Nic," O'Brien was a 2008 graduate of East Gaston High School. He was a well known player in baseball and soccer as a boy and a teenager here, and he also succeeded academically.Against the wishes of his parents, he declined a scholarship that would allow it to continue to play baseball at Belmont Abbey College to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a sailor.
On June 9, about two weeks after his 21st birthday, O'Brien was on patrol with his unit in Helmand province in the volatile region of southern Afghanistan, where he began a seven-month rotation in March. A bomb exploded and killed, while seriously injuring his close friend and teammate fire, Josh Cawthorn of Asheville.
A Memorial Service for June 20 in Gastonia O'Brien has been heavily involved. As his body was brought to the church in Charlotte / Douglas International Airport, thousands of people braved the heat of 90 degrees to the line 74 and the United States honor the funeral procession passed.
O'Brien retired jersey will be Saturday at the Dixie Youth District 4 Little League Tournament. Teams of boys from 9 to 10 years from Stanley, Dallas, Mount Holly and Kannapolis will be among the competitors.
