Washoe Country jobless rate ticks up to 11.8 percent
The greater Reno-Sparks regions jobless rate ticked up one-tenth of a point from April to 11.8 percent on a mixture of more construction and leisure-hospitality jobs and fewer in the government and professional/business services sectors. It represents a continuation of what weve been seeing: some stabilization but not much real growth, said Bill Anderson, chief economist at the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation which issued Fridays report.
Jobless rates are calculated from the results of surveys of employers taken at mid-month.
Within Washoe, an estimated 600 new construction jobs were created from April to May, the state report showed, with an additional 500 in the leisure-hospitality sector, which encompasses lodging, casinos and food services.
Craig Willcut, president/CEO of United Construction in Reno, said general activity is a bit better than it was, but he suspects the bulk of Mays growth was roads-related, adding, This is the season for that type of work.
He said his company has begun work on a 462,000-square-foot warehouse-distribution center for Urban Outfitters in Stead, but added, Were still a long ways off on the building side overall.
In the Carson City area, the May jobless rate declined one-tenth of a point to 11.5 percent, the report showed.
Nevada and other states adjust their statewide unemployment rates to more fairly compare with seasonal fluctuations in the job markets, Anderson said.
So Nevadas statewide seasonally adjusted jobless rate in May fell to 12.1 percent from 12.5 percent in April, according to the report.
Unadjusted, Nevadas rate of 12.1 percent was an increase from 11.9 percent in April, which Anderson said parallels the slight rise in Washoe and a four-tenths-point increase in Clark County to 12.4 percent.
While Nevada continued to hold the highest unemployment rate among the states in May, Anderson sees encouraging signs when the employment picture is expanded over the past five years.
