Postal Service asks Platts for help

But don't try telling him that his job is obsolete.Sure, a lot of people are sending e-mails or texts instead of letters. But people are also getting more parcels these days, after ordering things from Internet services such as eBay. And plenty of people, older people especially, still use the Postal Service to pay bills or get medicine.
"They depend on us," Johns said. "We're still their main line of communication, pretty much."
The Postal Service has definitely fallen on hard economic times lately, according to regional spokesman Ray Daiutolo Sr., and is operating at a deficit. But that's not because the Postal Service is inherently unprofitable, he said.
In fact, Daiutolo said, the Postal Service would be well in the black if not for some accounting practices mandated by federal regulations passed in 2006. Now the service is calling on members of Congress, including U.S. Rep. Todd Platts, R-York County, to change that.
Platts is a member of the Congressional Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which oversees the Postal Service, among other federal functions.
According to Daiutolo, the Postal Service is totally self-funded, and last year had a deficit of $8 billion.
Daiutolo said the Postal Service isn't asking Platts and other members of Congress for any additional money. The service has the money to eliminate the deficit, but isn't permitted to use it.
Daiutolo said the Postal Service is asking for three things:
--- Federal law now mandates that the Postal Service "pre-pay" $5.5 billion a year into its retirement system, which Daiutolo said goes to cover retirement benefits for employees hired over the next 75 years. The Postal Service is asking to make payments into its retirement system sufficient to cover current employees.
--- By complying with federal law, the Postal Service has paid a $6.
