Drops commonly used to prevent Swimmer's Ear, when used during an active infection, can do more harm than good. Generally, pediatricians will treat the condition with antibiotic ear drops that may contain steroids to keep the swelling down.
How can I prevent Swimmer's Ear? Keeping the ears as dry as possible is the key to prevention, according to the CDC. Using a swim cap or fitted ear plugs are both good tools to prevent infection as well as drying ears thoroughly after swimming or showering. Leave the ear wax--it helps prevent Swimmer's Ear.
