PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Westlake's defense doesn't rest
State football power Westlake High has scored so many points in recent seasons that it's been easy to forget about the Warriors' defense, but defensive unit could be the strength of this year's team.
The Warriors return all four starting defensive linemen from last year's Southern Section Northern Division runner-up roster.
Leading the group are national recruits Justin Solis and Johnny Stuart. Westlake has also welcomed back linebacker David Ortiz and defensive back Dashon Hunt.
"David Ortiz is a big-time run-stopper, a 6-1, 220-pounder who's really aggressive with a big-time motor that's always running," Westlake coach Jim Benkert said.
Hunt is developing into perhaps Westlake's top defensive back in school history. He's a junior who already has offers from UCLA and Washington, and Benkert says the best is yet to come.
"We're really haven't had a shut-down corner like Dashon in a really long time," Benkert said. "He's really established himself, the way he locks people up. Plus, he is a dynamic run-stopper. He brings the hat."
Another key returnee is kicker is Alex Ball, whose 204 points is the most ever for a Ventura County kicker. He recorded touchbacks on 83 percent of his kickoffs last year.
Alemany airborne
Alemany has won three seven-on-seven passing tournaments, and the Warriors are among the elite teams competing in the annual Valley College tournament Saturday.
"I don't know if it's a big deal or not, winning three tournaments, but our quarterback, Devon Dunn, is doing a good job. He's got a really good arm," Alemany coach Dean Herrington said.
Making Dunn's job easier is a strong corps of fast receivers including Jerico Richardson, Steven Mitchell, Corey Sims, Jeff Farrar and Devin Ross.
"I'm really excited about the receiving corps," Herrington said.
Alemany, which advanced to the Pac-5 semifinals last year, is the defending Serra League champion, but it won't be easy to repeat, Herrington said.
