Trio graduates from Learning Center for the Deaf in Framingham
The families of Keeshia Cook, Bridget Glynn and Ashley Perez didn't have a hard time picking the girls out at their graduation yesterday - they were the only ones wearing caps and gowns.
"We're like the Powerpuff Girls," said Glynn, who along with her two classmates comprise the entire class of 2011 at the Learning Center for the Deaf.
Three is a modest number of graduates even for the Framingham school, which typically sends off about a dozen seniors each year.
But then, graduation is always a little different at the Learning Center, a school that enrolls about 200 deaf and hard-of-hearing students from infancy through 12th grade.
"It's very personal compared to other high schools," principal Nancy Frazer Evangelista said. "The students put the whole thing together. They each get to speak. They show slide shows."
For some students, the Learning Center's Central Street campus is the only school they've ever known. That's the case for Glynn, 18, who started there as a 2-year-old in the parent-infant program. One of her favorite memories is playing in the school's old playground, which has since been demolished to make way for a new early childhood center.
"I'll never forget it," said Glynn, speaking through a sign language interpreter. "Just being here from such a young age, all my childhood memories were on that playground."
Cook, 20, said she'll miss the friends she made at the school. Perez, 19, a basketball player, said she'll remember her days on the court.
Two now head off to college. Glynn, who plans to study design - she made her own dress to wear to graduation - will attend Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf and hard-of-hearing in Washington, D.C. Perez will pursue early childhood education at Quinsigamond Community College with the goal of becoming a teacher.
Cook said she'll enter the work force, hoping to find a job working with animals.
