Collectors remember their baseball cards in the closet

John Liepa, Indianola, has led to conversations with his display of baseball cards and photographs from the 1800s.

The memory was part of the presentation Liepa a program library on the history of baseball in Iowa.

Matt Reuter, Le Mars, which includes baseball cards, looked at the collection Liepa.

"I was curious to see what he had," said Reuter. "I knew he was the oldest I've never seen before."

One must collectibles for Reuter was the Babe Ruth "Rookie" card Liepa said he bought 20 years ago.

"A young man came in a small (baseball card) show in Adventureland in Des Moines," recalled Liepa. "He had a stack of M101-5 (baseball cards) and wanted to buy a motorcycle. "

Baseball cards from the estate of father was the seller on a farm in eastern Iowa, Liepa said.

Mice had chewed a little on the bottom and the cards from the top of a stack held together by a rubber band, he said.

"Fortunately, Babe Ruth was in the middle," Liepa said.

As collectors and baseball fans filed past the collection of many cards Liepa said they had once belonged - until a mother cleaning a closet.

Liepa said that his mother was the exception, because she did not throw the cards away.

Reuter's mother also kept his cards.

He found all the baseball cards he had in 1973 when he started digging through them to the house of his parents in 1998.

"I forgot them until the McGuire-Sosa homerun face," he said.

Reuter added a Reggie Jackson "Rookie" card to his collection in the last year or so. He said it was the highlight of his collection to date.

He described it as an old map that is something interesting.

He found the card through a card collector was advertising for sale.

"I watch a lot of collections and just throw out prices to get them," said Reuter.
