Manville Police seize backpacks of stolen car radios, GPS units; three men jailed

Three men were arrested after being caught with a backpack stuffed with stolen electronic equipment removed 16 cars, the Somerset County prosecutor said Friday.

The men wore dark-colored, mud-splattered clothes when Manville police spotted them at about 1:15 Wednesday, June 15 walk on the bridge Van Veghten on Main Street, across from Auto Auctions Adessa.

A joint statement by the prosecutor's office and Manville police, the patrol found the combination satellite radio / DVD player / navigation units in the back and hidden under the bridge.Research the ADESA Auto Auction parking lot revealed that the units were removed from 16 vehicles.

Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano and Manville Police Chief Mark Peltack announced Friday the arrest of J. Wiles Kenneth, 21, of Old York Road Bridgewater, Joseph S. Hegyi, 22, of West Main Street Somerville, M and Sean. Niles, 24, of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Hegyi and Wiles were wearing backpacks stuffed with large metal objects protruding when they were first spotted, according to the prosecutor's office.

Initial investigations revealed that the backpacks contained eight defendants Chrysler Satellite Radio / DVD / navigation units valued at approximately $ 2,000 each. Further investigation located seven additional units wrapped in clothes under the bridge Van Veghten, according to the prosecutor's office.

Two of the vehicles that the units were removed were damaged beyond $ 500.

Each defendant was charged with burglary, third degree theft, third degree and criminal mischief, third degree.

Bond was set by Judge Angela F. Borkowski to $ 20,000 with a 10% provision to apply.All the accused have been introduced in the Somerset County Jail.

joecactus is correct, if the thieves get one of the toughest judges. It should be robbery, but people who creep into cars and stealing thousands of dollars of equipment are well aware that New Jersey courts are toothless. These guys will be back stealing GPS devices from the day they come out.
